December is almost upon us, and our thoughts are to Christmas (and Christmas knits!).

This little stocking is freaking adorable, and is perfect for a Christmas tree ornament or an embellishment on a card or wrapped gift!  It is knit flat and then seamed up, and is perfect for the intermediate knitter!

Materials: one ball red sock yarn (I used Diamond Footsie colour 121), one ball of white sock yarn (I used Schoeller Stahl Fortissima colour 1048). 2.75mm straight needles, tapestry needle

Gauge: not important!

Directions:

Using white yarn, cast on 24 stitches.

Work 6 rows of garter stitch, decreasing one stitch at each end every third row (20 stitches).

Switch to red yarn.  Knit in stockinette until work measures 1″ from cast on edge, ending on right side.

Set up row: purl 9, place marker, purl 2, place marker, purl to end.

Row 1: knit to marker, make one right, slip marker, knit to marker, slip marker, make one left, knit to end.

next row: Purl all stitches

Repeat these two rows twice more.

Row 7: Bind off three stitches at the beginning of the row. knit to marker, make one right, slip marker, knit to marker, slip marker, make one left, knit to end.

Row 8: Bind off three stitches purlwise, purl to end of row.

Row 9: Bind off one stitch at beginning of row, knit to marker, make one right, slip marker, knit to marker, make one left, knit to last two stitches, knit two together.

Row 10:: purl all stitches.

Row 11: Knit to 2 stitches before marker, knit two together. knit to next marker, slip slip knit. knit to end

Row 12: purl all stitches

Row 13: Knit to 2 stitches before marker, knit two together, knit to next marker, slip slip knit, knit to end.

Row 14: purl to two stitches before marker, purl two together through back loop.  Remove marker. Purl to next marker, remove marker, purl two together. purl to end of row.

Bind off all stitches knit wise.

With right sides together, mattress stitch seam (the seam is the back of the stocking, the heel and the bottom of the foot).  I used red yarn to stitch the red foot and white yarn to stitch the white cuff.  Weave in all ends and attach a loop to hang it.

Happy Holidays!
